This course is designed for providers who already have basic knowledge of wound repair. It is meant to be a brief review of basic skills with a majority of the time devoted to advanced skills. Through lecture we will review concepts. Skills will then be demonstrated using pig products, and participants will then practice skills with guidance from faculty. Attendance in the course will enhance provider confidence in wound repair. Basic knowledge of wound closure is highly suggested. Light dinner and all supplies will be provided.

This program has been reviewed and is approved for a maximum of 3.00 AAPA Category 1 CME credits by the PA Review Panel. PAs should claim only those hours actually spent participating in the CME activity.
This program was planned in accordance with AAPA’s CME Standards for Live Programs and for Commercial Support of Live Programs.

Objectives: By the end of this workshop, participants should be better able to:

Understand the indications and contraindications of repair of wounds by secondary intention, glue, tape, staple, and suture.
Understand when to use certain suture materials and needle selection.
Determine the need for tetanus and antibiotic prophylaxis.
Be familiar with how to close lacerations of the ear lobe, nail bed, and through and through lacerations of the mouth.
Be able to accurately describe and document the wound, wound care, and closure.
Perform wound closure techniques including subcutaneous sutures, running cutaneous stitch, mattress stitch, dog ear repairs, undermining a wound for tension, stellate lesion repair, skin avulsion repair, V and L shaped wound repair.
Know when to refer a wound to specialists (joint, tendon, concern for cosmetics)
